Western intelligence and government financing
The organization's substantial backing from the CIA, the US Counterintelligence Corps, the West German government, other Western intelligence services, and the Ford Foundation has made its independence and covert role a subject of historical controversy.
Members with Nazi backgrounds
Although some prominent members had resisted the Nazi regime, historian Enrico Heitzer has noted that the KgU also included activists with Nazi pasts whose political views had not necessarily changed.
