    Port Wentworth refinery explosion

On February 7, 2008, a chain of explosions at Imperial Sugar’s Port Wentworth, Georgia, refinery killed 14 people and injured more than 40. The likely initiating event was an overheated conveyor bearing, which ignited accumulated sugar dust and caused additional explosions in the finished-sugar packaging area. The disaster prompted criticism of industrial dust-explosion controls and federal safety preparedness.
