2008 payment-card data breach
Heartland disclosed that attackers had accessed its payment-processing systems in 2008 and stolen magnetic-stripe card data. The breach was widely characterized at the time as one of the largest criminal compromises of payment-card information. Criminal proceedings later resulted in convictions and prison sentences for participants in the hacking operation.
