Wirecard audit controversy
EY audited Wirecard for several years before the German payments company collapsed in June 2020 after disclosing that approximately EUR 1.9 billion supposedly held in trustee accounts could not be verified. The case prompted intense criticism of audit procedures, fraud-risk assessment, auditor skepticism and German financial oversight. It led to legal, political and regulatory scrutiny of EY's work and contributed to restrictions on accepting certain new public-interest audit mandates in Germany.
