Overview
Episerver was a Swedish enterprise software company and brand that developed platforms for managing websites, digital content, online commerce, marketing automation, personalization, and related digital experiences. The business began in Stockholm in 1994 as Elektropost Stockholm AB, founded by Mikael Runhem. Its initial work focused on internet-based electronic mail, but it subsequently moved toward tools that enabled organizations to create and manage websites. The first version of its EPiServer content-management platform appeared in 1997, and the first known live installation was deployed for Scandinavian Leisure Group in 1998. The company established its principal market identity through web content management. Its software was designed for organizations that needed centralized editorial workflows, structured content, multilingual publishing, permissions, integrations, and management of multiple digital properties. EPiServer CMS 4.0, released in 2002 and built on Microsoft's .NET Framework, marked an important stage in the platform's enterprise development. A later .NET-based version, EPiServer CMS 5, arrived in 2007. In 2006, Elektropost Stockholm AB changed its name to EPiServer AB, aligning the corporate identity more closely with its best-known product. During the 2010s, Episerver expanded beyond website management through ownership changes, acquisitions, and product consolidation. The company was acquired by IK Investment Partners in 2010 and was later associated with Accel-KKR, which also acquired Ektron, another content-management software provider. Episerver acquired Mediachase in 2012 to strengthen commerce and collaboration capabilities, followed by the Swedish enterprise-search provider 200OK and search company Euroling. In January 2015, Episerver and Ektron merged. The combined business brought together complementary CMS products and positioned the company as a broader digital-experience vendor rather than solely a web-content-management specialist. Following the Ektron combination, the company consolidated its software into the Episerver Digital Experience Cloud. It released a major post-merger platform update in June 2015 and changed the written brand style from EPiServer to Episerver later that year. Further acquisitions broadened the offering: Peerius added commerce personalization in 2016, Optivo added email-marketing automation, idio.io contributed content intelligence in 2019, and Insite Software expanded business-to-business commerce capabilities. These additions supported a platform strategy covering content, commerce, search, personalization, marketing automation, and analytics-oriented capabilities. Insight Venture Partners acquired Episerver in 2018. In late 2019, Alexander Atzberger became chief executive, after serving as President of Customer Experience at SAP. In October 2020, Episerver acquired Optimizely, a company associated with digital experimentation and optimization. In January 2021, Episerver announced that it would adopt the Optimizely name. As a result, Episerver ceased to be the primary commercial brand, while much of its technology and customer proposition continued within the Optimizely digital-experience platform. The historical Episerver brand is therefore best understood as a predecessor brand and product family within the active Optimizely business.
History
Episerver originated in Stockholm in 1994 as Elektropost Stockholm AB, founded by Mikael Runhem. The company initially worked with internet-based electronic mail before shifting toward tools for building and administering websites. It introduced the first version of the EPiServer CMS product in 1997, and Scandinavian Leisure Group became the first reported live installation in 1998. This early focus on practical website publishing established the product line that later became the company's central business. The platform developed into an enterprise web-content-management system. EPiServer CMS 4.0, released in 2002, was based on Microsoft's .NET Framework, and version 5 followed in 2007. The corporate name changed to EPiServer AB in 2006. The business subsequently became investor-owned; its owners in 2010 included Amadeus Capital, Martin Bjäringer, Monterro Holdings, Northzone Ventures, Mikael Runhem and employees and family members. In late 2010, the investor group sold the company to IK Investment Partners through the IK 2007 Fund. The business was later sold to Accel-KKR, which had also acquired Ektron. Episerver pursued a broader software strategy through acquisitions. Mediachase was acquired in March 2012, bringing commerce and collaboration capabilities. In May 2012, Episerver acquired Swedish enterprise-search provider 200OK, and in May 2013 it acquired Swedish search provider Euroling. These transactions helped move the company beyond a conventional CMS category toward a portfolio covering content, commerce, and search. A decisive change came in January 2015, when Episerver and Ektron merged. Mark Duffell became President and CEO, James Norwood became Executive Vice President of Strategy and CMO, and Martin Henricson, who had led the former Episerver business, became Executive Chairman. The combined company consolidated its technology into the Episerver Digital Experience Cloud and released a major platform version in June 2015. Later that year, it changed the brand presentation from EPiServer to Episerver and introduced the shortened Epi form. The company continued to add specialized capabilities. In August 2016 it acquired London-based Peerius, a commerce-personalization provider; the technology was subsequently integrated as EpiPersonalization. In October 2016 it acquired Berlin-based Optivo, an email-marketing automation provider. In November 2019 it acquired idio.io, which supplied content-intelligence technology. In December 2019 it acquired Insite Software, extending its B2B commerce capabilities. Also in December 2019, Alexander Atzberger joined as CEO. Insight Venture Partners acquired Episerver in September 2018 in a deal reported at about $1.16 billion. The company's final major identity transition followed its October 2020 acquisition of Optimizely, a digital-experimentation company. In January 2021, Episerver announced that it was rebranding as Optimizely. The Episerver name consequently became a historical brand and product lineage within the Optimizely business rather than the name of the continuing operating company.
