Hautefaye incident
On 16 August 1870, Alain de Monéys was violently attacked and killed by a crowd in Hautefaye. The episode unfolded shortly after France declared war on Prussia and was influenced by rumor, wartime patriotism, political tensions, and local crowd dynamics. Four people were ultimately sentenced to death and executed by guillotine on 13 February 1871.
