Overview
Disklavier is a Yamaha Corporation brand built around the reproducing piano: an acoustic piano equipped with electronic sensors, computer-controlled actuators and related digital interfaces. During recording, sensors capture the movement and timing of the keys, hammers and pedals. The system stores the resulting performance data, traditionally as Yamaha-specific files and later as Standard MIDI Files or higher-resolution proprietary data. During playback, electromechanical solenoids move the piano’s keys and pedals so that the acoustic instrument reproduces the recorded performance. This combination distinguishes Disklavier from a conventional digital piano, because the primary sound source remains the strings, soundboard and mechanical action of an acoustic piano. Yamaha introduced an earlier Japanese reproducing instrument called Piano Player in 1982 and followed it with the MX100R in Japan in 1985. The first United States Disklavier was the MX100A studio upright, introduced in 1987. Early instruments used floppy disks and Yamaha’s E-SEQ recording format, while also providing MIDI input and output. The product family subsequently expanded from upright pianos to baby grands, grands and concert-scale instruments. In 1989 Yamaha introduced its first Disklavier grand, later informally associated with the Wagon Grand because its control electronics were housed in a separate cabinet on wheels. The Mark II generation, introduced in 1992, added broader support for hammer sensing, incremental pedal data and Standard MIDI Files. The Mark IIXG generation added high-density floppy storage, internal memory, multitrack recording and a tone generator supporting General MIDI, Roland GS and Yamaha XG sound sets. During this period Yamaha also offered upright models with silent functionality, allowing the hammers to be stopped from striking the strings while the player listened through headphones or used the instrument’s electronic sound system. The Disklavier PRO, introduced in 1999, positioned the line as a high-precision performance and educational platform. PRO instruments recorded more detailed key and pedal information than ordinary MIDI systems, including extended-precision data for key velocity, release velocity and pedal movement. This capability supported unusually accurate reproduction and helped the instruments become associated with remote performance, piano competitions, archival recording and research into piano technique. The system was used in the International Piano-e-Competition to transmit synchronized performance data and video so that a juror could observe and hear a performance remotely. The Mark III generation, introduced in 2000, added low-volume playback improvements, synchronized audio, CD-ROM playback, SmartKey play-along functions and video synchronization using MIDI Time Code. Yamaha’s Disklavier PRO 2000 concept piano, produced in a very limited run, combined the Mark III PRO system with an integrated computer, touchscreen and concert-scale case design. The Mark IV series followed in 2004 and brought a network-oriented architecture based on embedded Linux, wireless and computer control, internal storage, expanded audio connections, USB support and Internet-updatable software. Yamaha later connected Mark IV instruments to services including DisklavierRadio and DisklavierTV, which delivered performance data, audio and, in some cases, synchronized video. The E3 system debuted in 2009 and initially served smaller grand pianos while Mark IV remained available. After Mark IV production ended in 2012, E3 became the principal contemporary Disklavier platform in the United States, appearing in selected grand pianos and an upright model. History
Disklavier developed from Yamaha’s effort to combine the expressive mechanics of an acoustic piano with the storage and transmission capabilities of digital performance data. Yamaha’s Japanese Piano Player, introduced in 1982, established the basic concept of recording and replaying a pianist’s performance through an acoustic instrument. The MX100R followed in Japan in 1985. In the United States, Yamaha launched the MX100A upright in 1987, followed by the slightly revised MX100B. These early products used floppy disks, Yamaha’s E-SEQ file format and MIDI connections. Their technical foundation included sensors for key and hammer activity and solenoids that could reproduce the recorded actions. The first Disklavier grand appeared in 1989. Because its control electronics were placed in a wheeled cabinet, the model became known informally as the Wagon Grand. In the early 1990s Yamaha also introduced the MX80 family of smaller uprights. These early models established the product’s essential identity: a genuine acoustic piano that could function both as a normal instrument and as a programmable reproducing system. The Mark II generation arrived in 1992 with improved sensing and support for Standard MIDI Files and incremental pedal recording. The Mark IIXG followed within two years and added high-density floppy disks, nonvolatile internal memory, multitrack recording and a built-in tone generator. Yamaha also supplied upgrade hardware, including the DSR1 module, for some earlier Disklaviers. Selected uprights incorporated silent systems that prevented the hammers from striking the strings while allowing headphone monitoring through an electronic piano sound. In 1999 Yamaha introduced the Disklavier PRO. Its principal distinction was high-resolution recording and reproduction. Instead of limiting performance data to the conventional 0–127 MIDI ranges, the PRO recorded additional key and pedal information using Yamaha’s extended-precision approach. It could capture key movements that did not necessarily produce audible notes, allowing a more detailed reconstruction of a pianist’s technique. The technology was subsequently used by the International Piano-e-Competition for remote judging, virtual auditions and distribution of synchronized performance files. The Mark III generation, introduced in 2000, improved quiet playback and added synchronized audio, CD-ROM playback, SmartKey learning features and video synchronization through MIDI Time Code. Yamaha also developed the Disklavier PRO 2000 concept piano around this period. Only a small number were produced, and the instrument combined a large acoustic grand with a touchscreen computer, integrated software and the Mark III PRO system. Yamaha introduced the Mark IV in 2004. Unlike earlier systems, its control environment used embedded Linux and supported wireless handheld control, network connections, computer-based operation, USB storage and USB MIDI. Its network architecture enabled later services such as DisklavierRadio, which streamed performance data to the instrument, and DisklavierTV, which combined video and audio with data that mechanically operated the piano. Yamaha also expanded remote control through an iOS application in 2011. The E3 system debuted in 2009 and initially overlapped with Mark IV. It was first offered mainly in smaller grand pianos, then expanded after Mark IV production ended in 2012. Larger E3 instruments received PRO-level capabilities, producing the E3 PRO. Across its development, Disklavier moved from floppy-disk playback toward networked storage, wireless control, mobile applications, streaming and synchronized multimedia. It remains a Yamaha acoustic-piano platform intended for performance reproduction, practice, teaching, entertainment, composition and remote musical communication.
