Overview
Delivery Hero SE is a Berlin-based German technology and services group focused on online food ordering, food delivery and rapid commerce. Founded in 2011, it developed from a European restaurant-ordering startup into a multinational network of locally branded platforms. Its services connect consumers, restaurants, shops and independent or contracted couriers through websites and smartphone applications. The company has operated across Europe, Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East, with its geographic footprint changing frequently as it acquired competitors, sold country operations or withdrew from markets where competition and delivery costs made the model uneconomic. The group’s portfolio has included major regional platforms such as foodpanda, PedidosYa, Talabat, Yemeksepeti, Woowa Brothers’ Baedal Minjok, Glovo and HungerStation. Some of these businesses have been fully owned, while others have formed part of a broader investment or acquisition strategy. Delivery Hero has generally sought strong local positions rather than presenting one uniform consumer brand worldwide. This approach allows individual platforms to retain local names, languages, restaurant relationships and logistics practices while sharing technology, data, operational expertise and purchasing scale within the group. Food delivery remains the company’s core activity. The platform model typically provides restaurant discovery, digital menus, ordering, payment and courier dispatch. Delivery Hero has also expanded into quick commerce, using small fulfillment locations and courier networks to deliver groceries, convenience products and other small-basket orders rapidly. This expansion increased the company’s addressable market but also exposed it to demanding unit economics, labor costs, local regulation and intense competition from other delivery platforms, restaurants’ own services and retail companies. The company’s growth has been driven by venture financing, acquisitions and consolidation. Early transactions included Lieferheld and other European ordering portals. Later deals added PedidosYa, Yemeksepeti, Foodora, Foodpanda, Woowa Brothers and a controlling interest in Glovo. Delivery Hero also sold or closed operations in several markets, including Germany, where it disposed of its principal local platforms to Takeaway.com in 2019 and briefly re-entered before leaving again in 2021. Such exits illustrate the group’s willingness to prioritize market leadership and profitability over maintaining a presence in every country. Delivery Hero became a public company on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange in June 2017 and was added to Germany’s DAX index in 2020 after the collapse of Wirecard. Its business has remained subject to substantial scrutiny. Authorities and courts have examined competition, courier employment classification, data practices and consolidation in local delivery markets. Labor disputes have concerned pay, working conditions and whether couriers should be treated as employees or independent contractors. Regulatory intervention has also affected proposed transactions, including the proposed sale of foodpanda’s Taiwan business to Uber, which was blocked by Taiwan’s Fair Trade Commission in 2024. The company is positioned as an international digital platform consolidator with a locally adapted operating model. Its principal strategic challenges are improving profitability, managing regulatory and labor exposure, defending leading positions against global and regional rivals, and deciding which markets and business lines deserve continued investment.
History
Delivery Hero was established in Berlin in May 2011 by Niklas Östberg, Kolja Hebenstreit, Markus Fuhrmann and Lukasz Gadowski. Its initial objective was to build a scalable online ordering network rather than a single local restaurant service. The company expanded early into Australia and the United Kingdom and then used acquisitions and investment to build a European footprint. Lieferheld in Germany, OnlinePizza in Sweden, PizzaPortal in Poland and Pizza-Online in Finland were among the early additions. During 2012 and 2013, Delivery Hero expanded into Asian markets and increased its investment in TastyKhana. The period was marked by fierce rivalry among online food portals in Germany. Reports concerning denial-of-service attacks, alleged data theft and related legal proceedings created a significant controversy around the competitive environment. Delivery Hero’s Berlin office was raided and prosecutors pursued allegations concerning attacks on competitors and misuse of data. These allegations and proceedings became part of the company’s early public history. The group accelerated its international consolidation in 2014 and 2015. It acquired a controlling interest in the Latin American platform PedidosYa, bought German rival Pizza.de, and added Baedaltong in South Korea. In 2015 it acquired Yemeksepeti in Turkey, e-food.gr in Greece and Foodora from Rocket Internet. These transactions strengthened the company’s regional presence while increasing its dependence on a portfolio of distinct local brands. Foodpanda was acquired in December 2016, extending Delivery Hero’s reach across Asia and other international markets. In the same period, the group agreed to sell Hungryhouse in the United Kingdom to Just Eat. Delivery Hero went public in Frankfurt on 30 June 2017, raising capital for further growth and becoming one of Europe’s most prominent technology listings. It continued to acquire or invest in platforms including Otlob, Carriage, Appetito24, Foodfly, Hipmenu, Foody, InstaShop and other regional services. A major strategic reversal occurred in Germany. Delivery Hero sold its German operations to Takeaway.com in 2019, including Lieferheld, Pizza.de and the German foodora business. Takeaway.com consolidated the restaurants and customers under Lieferando. Delivery Hero later briefly restarted German operations in 2021 as Uber Eats and Wolt expanded, but withdrew again before the end of that year, citing the high cost of competing in the market. The company expanded its quick-commerce activities and bought InstaShop in 2020. It also pursued a transformative Asian transaction: the acquisition of Woowa Brothers, operator of South Korea’s Baedal Minjok, which was completed in 2021. At the end of 2021 Delivery Hero agreed to buy additional Glovo shares, taking its interest to a controlling level; the transaction closed in July 2022 after regulatory clearances. Delivery Hero’s subsequent strategy has combined portfolio management with attempts to improve economics. It has continued to operate major brands while leaving selected countries and considering transactions involving non-core assets. Labor classification, courier conditions, competition law and market concentration remain recurring issues because the business relies heavily on app-dispatched delivery workers and dense local logistics networks. The proposed sale of foodpanda Taiwan to Uber was blocked by Taiwan’s competition authority in 2024, demonstrating the regulatory constraints facing further consolidation. Foodpanda later ended its Thai operations in 2025. The company’s present identity is therefore that of a listed, multinational platform group whose scale was built through acquisitions but whose ongoing strategy depends on selective geographic participation, disciplined capital allocation and sustainable delivery economics.
