Charleroi Pyrex plant closure controversy
Anchor Hocking's plan to close the historic Pyrex manufacturing plant in Charleroi, Pennsylvania, and consolidate production in Lancaster, Ohio, produced strong political and community opposition. Pennsylvania officials criticized the economic impact and questioned whether the combination of major competitors had received sufficient antitrust scrutiny. The state filed a lawsuit seeking to stop the closure, but a federal judge dismissed the case. The plant ultimately closed permanently in April 2025.

Pyrex glass-material safety debate
The use of tempered soda-lime glass in some clear Pyrex bakeware, instead of more thermally resistant borosilicate glass, prompted consumer safety concerns about sudden temperature changes and breakage. Consumer Reports found borosilicate glass less susceptible to thermal shock under its test conditions, while another analysis emphasized that mechanical impacts were a more common source of injuries and that soda-lime glass offered greater mechanical strength. The supplied sources do not establish a formal recall.
