CONMEBOL governance and football corruption investigation
On 27 May 2015, Swiss police arrested several South American football leaders in Zurich while the United States Department of Justice pursued allegations involving corruption, money laundering and racketeering. Former CONMEBOL presidents Eugenio Figueredo and Nicolás Leoz, along with other football administrators, were connected with the investigation. CONMEBOL president Juan Ángel Napout was arrested on 3 December 2015. The events caused a major leadership crisis and intensified scrutiny of the confederation's administration and commercial practices.
