Pidjiguiti massacre and CUF-linked colonial labor repression

Workers at Gouveia’s docks in Bissau, a CUF subsidiary, struck over low wages and poor working conditions on 3 August 1959. PIDE, the political police of the Estado Novo regime, violently suppressed the strike and killed at least 25 workers according to the cited account. The incident became known as the Pidjiguiti massacre and is part of the history of colonial labor repression and the anti-colonial struggle in Guinea.
