Dispute over the claimed dire wolves
Colossal’s presentation of genetically edited gray-wolf pups as dire wolves was challenged by independent scientists and the IUCN Species Survival Commission’s Canid Specialist Group. Critics said the animals were not dire wolves or valid conservation proxies and would not restore the extinct species’ ecological function. Colossal later clarified that the animals were gray wolves with 20 edits and that the term was being used colloquially.
