Hans Niemann cheating controversy
Chess.com became a central institution in the dispute involving Magnus Carlsen's accusations against Hans Niemann. Leaked communications and the platform's fair-play investigations concerning Niemann and other titled players intensified debate over online cheating detection, account closures, evidence, transparency, and the relationship between online and over-the-board chess. Niemann later sued Chess.com and other parties; the lawsuit was dismissed in 2023.
