U.S. sanctions over alleged support for the Maduro government

The United States Treasury sanctioned the BCV in April 2019, alleging that it was being used as a tool of the Nicolás Maduro government. The action restricted the bank's access to the U.S.-linked financial system and became one of the most consequential international controversies involving the institution.

  2. Concerns over loss of central-bank autonomy and economic-data transparency

Critics argued that reforms during the 2010s weakened the BCV's legally intended autonomy. The bank's interruption or limitation of important economic-statistics publications, including inflation and GDP data, also drew criticism and contributed to uncertainty about Venezuela's economic condition.
