Overview
CATIA is a multidisciplinary computer-aided design, manufacturing and engineering software suite developed by Dassault Systèmes. Its name originated as an acronym for computer-aided three-dimensional interactive application, while the earlier French development name CATI referred to conception assistée tridimensionnelle interactive. The product is positioned as a high-end engineering and product-development environment rather than as a narrowly focused drafting application. The software began as an internal project at Avions Marcel Dassault in 1977. The aircraft manufacturer needed advanced three-dimensional surface-modelling and numerical-control capabilities for work associated with the Mirage fighter aircraft and for use alongside the CADAM system. The project was initially known as CATI. In 1981, after Dassault created Dassault Systèmes as a separate software company, the name became CATIA. Francis Bernard served as the new subsidiary's first chief executive, and Dassault Systèmes took responsibility for developing and commercializing the application. CATIA entered the market through a non-exclusive distribution relationship with IBM, which was also involved in distributing CADAM. The first commercial version appeared in 1982 as an extension for CADAM. During the 1980s, the software gained users in aerospace and military engineering, including Boeing and General Dynamics Electric Boat. Its sophisticated surface and shape-modelling tools helped establish the product in sectors where complex forms, strict engineering constraints and large collaborative programs are important. Architect Frank Gehry used CATIA in the development of highly complex curvilinear buildings, and Gehry Technologies worked on a related product called Digital Project based on CATIA technology. Dassault Systèmes later incorporated CATIA into its broader 3DEXPERIENCE strategy. With the launch of the 3DEXPERIENCE platform in 2014, CATIA became available through cloud-oriented delivery as well as established enterprise deployment models. History
CATIA originated inside Avions Marcel Dassault in 1977. The aircraft manufacturer was seeking a way to improve three-dimensional surface design and numerical-control work for aircraft programs, including development associated with the Mirage fighter, while working with the CADAM system. The internal project was first called CATI. Its early purpose was therefore closely tied to aerospace engineering, but the underlying technology was designed to address complex geometry and manufacturing requirements that could also apply to other industries. In 1981, Dassault created Dassault Systèmes as a dedicated software company. The project was renamed CATIA and placed under the new company's development and commercial activities. Francis Bernard became the first chief executive of Dassault Systèmes.
