Cardinal Funeral Homes was founded in 1925 by James Cardinal in Fort William (now Thunder Bay). In 1941, James moved to Toronto and opened Cardinal Funeral Homes at 366 Bathurst Street. His son Leo became a licensed funeral director in 1940 but initially did not join the business, serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. In the mid-1950s, Leo returned to Toronto to support his ailing father and assume leadership.
