Board gender-diversity target criticism
Card Factory was criticized after failing to meet a commitment to have 40% female representation on its board by December 2024. Two of the six board members were women, and the company said appointing an additional director solely to meet the target would not serve shareholders’ interests.

Health-and-safety prosecution following customer fall
Card Factory was fined £15,000 after an elderly customer tripped over a cardboard box that had fallen from a display area in an aisle. The customer suffered a fractured thigh, later underwent emergency hip surgery and died while recovering after contracting Clostridioides difficile. The prosecution concerned the company’s failure to report the incident promptly under the applicable injury-reporting regulations.
Repeated store health-and-safety enforcement
The company has faced multiple successful prosecutions involving issues such as poor stock management, blocked fire exits, overstocked stores, damaged equipment, inadequate risk assessments and insufficient staff training.
