Overview
CanDeal is a Canadian electronic trading platform focused on institutional markets for Canadian-dollar debt securities, money-market instruments and derivatives. Its marketplace connects institutional investors with dealer liquidity in products including Canadian government bonds, provincial bonds and interest-rate derivatives. The company operates within Canada's regulated alternative-trading-system framework and is associated with the Canadian fixed-income market rather than with consumer financial products or retail brokerage. The business was created on June 27, 2001, by a group of Canadian financial-market participants that included BMO Nesbitt Burns, Basis100, CIBC World Markets, MoneyLine Network, National Bank Financial, RBC Dominion Securities, Scotia Capital and TD Securities. The founding structure reflected the market's need for a common electronic venue through which dealers could distribute Canadian-dollar fixed-income liquidity to institutional clients. CanDeal became a member of the Investment Dealers Association of Canada and received alternative trading system status from the Ontario Securities Commission on July 2, 2002. TMX Group acquired a 40 percent interest in the company in July 2002, and the platform completed its first trade in September of that year. CanDeal expanded its product coverage and institutional functionality during the 2000s. It added provincial bond issues in 2003, introduced an electronic inter-dealer network called Revolution Trading in 2005, and acquired MoneyLine's shares in 2006. Trading activity grew rapidly, with cumulative volume passing C$100 billion in 2004, C$500 billion in 2006 and C$1 trillion in 2007. The platform subsequently added tools such as butterfly trading and a mobile fixed-income pricing application, broadening its utility for professional market participants. The company later extended beyond cash fixed income. In 2013 it launched what was described as Canada's first multi-dealer-to-client electronic trading platform for Canadian-dollar interest-rate swaps. By 2014, aggregate fixed-income and derivatives volume had exceeded C$10 trillion, and by December 2019 reported cumulative volume had passed C$25 trillion. These figures describe transaction volume handled through the platform over time, not CanDeal revenue or assets under management. In 2018, the ownership structure was reorganized so that TMX Group and each of Canada's six largest banks held equal stakes, replacing the earlier arrangement in which TMX held a larger minority position. In 2019, CanDeal and its ownership group established CanDeal Data & Analytics, known as DNA, as a market-data hub for Canadian fixed-income and derivatives markets. DNA acquired CIBC's fixed-income data business in 2021. CanDeal's current public positioning therefore combines electronic execution with market-data and analytics capabilities for institutional fixed-income participants. Its offices in Toronto and Montreal support a business centered on the Canadian market.
History
CanDeal was formed in 2001 by a consortium of Canadian securities dealers, financial-technology participants and market intermediaries. Its founding shareholders included BMO Nesbitt Burns, Basis100, CIBC World Markets, MoneyLine Network, National Bank Financial, RBC Dominion Securities, Scotia Capital and TD Securities. The venture was designed to provide a centralized electronic venue for institutional trading in Canadian-dollar debt securities, a market historically dependent on dealer relationships and voice-based processes. A key early development came on July 2, 2002, when the Ontario Securities Commission granted CanDeal alternative trading system status. The company had also become a member of the Investment Dealers Association of Canada. TMX Group acquired a 40 percent stake in CanDeal on July 8, 2002, and the platform executed its first trade on September 10. In January 2003, founder Jayson Horner left TD Securities to become CanDeal's full-time president and chief executive. The company expanded its marketplace that year by adding provincial bond issues, while in February it purchased Basis100's equity interest and the Canadian rights to BasisXchange. CanDeal's transaction volumes increased as institutional participants adopted electronic execution. Aggregate volume exceeded C$100 billion in August 2004, and the company reported a single-day volume above C$1 billion in October of that year. Monthly volume reached C$10 billion in December 2004. In November 2005, CanDeal launched Revolution Trading, an electronic inter-dealer network intended to complement its dealer-to-client activity. It acquired MoneyLine's shares in March 2006. Cumulative volume then passed C$500 billion in October 2006 and C$1 trillion in August 2007. During the next phase, CanDeal added more sophisticated execution and pricing tools. Butterfly trading was introduced in 2009, and a mobile fixed-income pricing application followed in 2010. Reported cumulative trading volume passed C$3 trillion in July 2010 and C$4 trillion in April 2011. In January 2013, CanDeal entered the electronic interest-rate-derivatives market with a multi-dealer-to-client platform for Canadian-dollar interest-rate swaps. By June 2014, cumulative fixed-income and derivatives volume had exceeded C$10 trillion. The ownership model changed materially in October 2018. TMX Group and each of Canada's six largest banks adopted equal stakes in CanDeal, replacing the previous structure in which TMX had held a 47 percent interest according to the company's historical account. The change aligned the major Canadian dealer owners and the exchange-group shareholder around shared market infrastructure. In February 2019, CanDeal and its ownership group created CanDeal Data & Analytics, or DNA, as a market-data hub for Canadian fixed-income and derivatives markets. The initiative extended CanDeal's role from electronic execution into data and analytics. In December 2019, the company reported cumulative volume above C$25 trillion. DNA later acquired CIBC's fixed-income data business in March 2021.
