Temporary blocking of China Quarterly articles in China

Cambridge University Press temporarily restricted access in China to 315 articles in The China Quarterly after its Chinese importer instructed it to remove politically sensitive material. The articles concerned topics including the 1989 Tiananmen protests, Tibet, Xinjiang, Hong Kong and the Cultural Revolution. After criticism from scholars and wider public scrutiny, Cambridge restored access. The incident occurred before the 2021 merger but remains a significant controversy in the history of the Cambridge Press brand and its debates about academic freedom, market access and censorship.
