    Omai mine acid spill

A tailings dam failure at the Omai mine released an estimated four million cubic metres of waste containing cyanide, heavy metals, and other pollutants into the Essequibo River. The spill caused reported ecological damage and affected communities dependent on the river. It led to litigation in Quebec and Guyana and became the defining environmental controversy in Cambior's history.
