Busang gold-sample fraud
Bre-X’s reported Indonesian gold discovery was discredited after independent testing found that drill samples had been salted with gold. The resulting share-price collapse and bankruptcy caused major losses for tens of thousands of investors.

Death of Michael de Guzman
Bre-X chief geologist Michael de Guzman died during a helicopter trip to the Busang site. Although the death was reported as suicide, disputed identification and other unusual circumstances led to continuing speculation.
