Los Frailes tailings dam disaster
On 25 April 1998, the tailings dam at the Los Frailes mine in southern Spain, operated by Boliden's subsidiary Apirsa, failed. Mining waste entered the surrounding waterways and agricultural areas, producing extensive ecological and public controversy in the Doñana region. The event contributed to the financial and reputational difficulties that Boliden faced at the end of the 1990s.
