Former Blue Sky staff members reportedly told Insider that Disney leadership pushed back on LGBT-related elements of Nimona, including a same-sex kiss, during development before Blue Sky was closed. The reports connected the controversy to broader criticism of Disney's handling of LGBT representation. The film was later completed outside Blue Sky and released by Netflix.
