History
Blender's history began in the Dutch computer-animation scene during the 1990s. Ton Roosendaal developed the software for NeoGeo, an animation studio where it served as an in-house tool for organizing scenes and producing computer graphics. The software gradually became more ambitious, moving beyond studio utility toward a general-purpose 3D creation environment. In 1998, Roosendaal established Not a Number Technologies to develop and commercialize Blender. The company pursued a freemium-style model and sought investment, but the business was unable to sustain its operations. After Not a Number's collapse, the future of the software was uncertain. Roosendaal and supporters created the Blender Foundation, a nonprofit organization intended to preserve the project and coordinate its development.
