Discounted branded footwear quality controversy
An investigation led to a $125,000 fine after discounted shoes bearing major brand names were found to have been manufactured with lower-cost specifications for Big 5 distribution. The matter began after runner Gary Tuttle questioned the quality of shoes he had purchased, including a New Balance model reportedly using a cardboard heel cup instead of a plastic one.
