Overview
BENlabs is an entertainment marketing and intellectual-property services company based in Los Angeles. It is best known for arranging and managing the integration of brands into films, television programs, online video, social media, music, and other forms of entertainment. Its capabilities include product placement, influencer marketing, artificial-intelligence-supported brand integration, music partnerships, image and music clearances, licensing, and the commercial management of personality rights. The business originated in 1989 in Seattle as Interactive Home Systems, a venture founded by Bill Gates around the idea of delivering digitized art and imagery through future digital-display technologies. The company later became Continuum Productions and then Corbis Corporation. Corbis initially pursued the digitization and licensing of artworks, historical imagery, photography, and footage. Its business evolved toward image licensing during the 1990s, supported by acquisitions such as the Bettmann Archive, Sygma, Westlight, Digital Stock, Outline Press Syndicate, and ZEFA. Although this earlier activity was principally associated with stock imagery, Corbis also developed entertainment-sector services, including brand integration and rights clearance. The entertainment operations became the foundation for the modern BEN business. Corbis acquired Plaid Social Labs in 2015 to expand into digital influencer marketing and integrations, and acquired the product-placement agency Norm Marshall Group in 2012. The company also operated or acquired businesses connected with celebrity imagery, news photography, licensing, and rights services, including Splash News, GreenLight, and Demotix. These activities gave it relationships and expertise spanning advertisers, studios, platforms, creators, estates, and other rights holders. In January 2016, Corbis sold its general image-licensing businesses and related libraries to Unity Glory International, an affiliate of Visual China Group. The transaction covered Corbis Images, Corbis Motion, Veer, and associated assets, while the entertainment operations were retained. Distribution of much of the former Corbis image library outside China subsequently moved to Getty Images. In May 2016, the retained entertainment business was renamed Branded Entertainment Network and moved its operations to Los Angeles. The reorganization marked a strategic shift away from archival image licensing and toward entertainment marketing and intellectual-property services. BEN expanded its focus on measurable brand integration across traditional and digital media. Its work has included arranging brand appearances, creator partnerships, music-related integrations, commercial clearances, and licensing of the names, likenesses, and publicity rights of notable personalities and estates. The company has described the use of data and artificial intelligence to identify opportunities and improve the planning of placements across entertainment channels. In 2018, Ricky Ray Butler became chief executive officer. In February 2023, the business adopted the BENlabs name, reflecting its broader technology-enabled positioning. BENlabs remains an active private company serving advertisers and entertainment-industry clients. Its current identity is distinct from the Corbis image-licensing operation that was sold in 2016, although its corporate history and some of its rights-management capabilities derive from that earlier business.
History
The company that became BENlabs was founded by Bill Gates in Seattle in 1989 as Interactive Home Systems. Its original concept involved digitally displaying works of art in homes, an idea dependent on display and delivery technologies that were not yet commercially mature. The company changed its name to Continuum Productions in 1992 and later became Corbis Corporation. Corbis redirected its attention from the original consumer-display concept toward digitizing, managing, and licensing visual content. It formed relationships with cultural institutions and image collections, including the National Gallery in London, the Library of Congress, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the State Hermitage Museum. In 1995 it acquired the Bettmann Archive, a major historical image collection that included material from United Press International and predecessor agencies. The company subsequently added photographer and agency collections, including work associated with Ansel Adams, Westlight, Digital Stock, Outline Press Syndicate, Sygma, and ZEFA. The resulting business became a substantial international provider of stock, editorial, historical, and entertainment imagery. During the late 1990s and 2000s, Corbis expanded through acquisitions and new services. It entered footage licensing, developed products for professional and business users, and operated brands such as Corbis Images, Corbis Motion, Corbis Outline, and Veer. Its rights-services division was renamed GreenLight in 2008. Corbis also experimented with microstock through SnapVillage, later folding that operation into Veer, and operated media-management and celebrity-photo businesses. The company created preservation facilities for its historical collections, including the Bettmann Archive in western Pennsylvania and the Sygma collection near Paris. Alongside image licensing, Corbis increasingly built services for entertainment and advertising. It worked on brand integration, rights clearance, and the commercial use of personality rights. The acquisition of Norm Marshall Group in 2012 strengthened product-placement capabilities, while the acquisition of Plaid Social Labs in 2015 broadened the business into influencer marketing and digital integrations. Other related operations included Splash News, GreenLight, and Demotix, giving the company exposure to celebrity photography, news distribution, and commercial rights administration. A decisive restructuring occurred in January 2016, when Corbis sold its general image-licensing operations and associated assets to Unity Glory International, an affiliate of Visual China Group. The sale included the Corbis Images, Corbis Motion, and Veer businesses and their libraries. Getty Images became the principal distributor of Corbis content outside China, while Corbis retained its entertainment activities. In May of that year, the retained business was renamed Branded Entertainment Network and moved to Los Angeles. This separated the future BEN business from the image-licensing operations that had defined much of Corbis's earlier history. Branded Entertainment Network concentrated on product placement, branded entertainment, influencer campaigns, music partnerships, rights clearance, licensing, and personality-rights management. Its clients and partners could include advertisers, entertainment producers, creators, studios, estates, and rights holders. The company increasingly described data and artificial intelligence as tools for identifying placement opportunities, matching brands with content, and evaluating integrations across film, television, online video, and social platforms. Ricky Ray Butler became chief executive in 2018. The business received an Agency of the Year award at the 2020 Streamy Awards. In February 2023, BEN Group was rebranded BENlabs, signaling a broader identity built around technology-enabled entertainment marketing rather than traditional product placement alone. BENlabs continues to operate as a private Los Angeles-based services company. Its current business is the surviving entertainment and rights-management platform descended from Corbis, not the general image-licensing business sold in 2016.
