High-dose diphenhydramine misuse and the Benadryl challenge
Reports of teenagers being hospitalized or dying after taking excessive amounts of diphenhydramine were linked in media coverage to a purported social-media challenge. The reports led to renewed warnings about overdose risks and the dangers of treating the medicine as a recreational product.
2010
Benadryl lot recalls over odor and quality concerns
McNeil Consumer Healthcare recalled five lots after an unusual odor was associated with 2,4,6-tribromoanisole. A separate recall affected more than four million packs of children's allergy tablets because of concerns about ingredient concentration and inactive-ingredient testing.
