    Woburn groundwater contamination litigation

Beatrice was a co-defendant with W. R. Grace in litigation alleging that waste from the Riley Tannery, a Beatrice division, contaminated an underground aquifer supplying drinking water in East Woburn, Massachusetts. The case became widely known through the book and film A Civil Action. A federal judge initially ruled that Beatrice was not responsible; later accounts describe subsequent evidence and legal developments differently, so the final historical interpretation requires careful source checking.
