Wastewater discharge investigation
Environment Canterbury investigated allegations that Barker's had improperly discharged wastewater. Reports described irrigation of wastewater onto a nearby field and a Department of Conservation reserve, strong odours, alleged damage to grass, and the presence of caustic soda used for pH control. The company began trucking wastewater off-site for treatment and disputed wrongdoing. A staff member was fined for ignoring abatement notices.
