Banesto financial crisis and regulatory intervention
The Bank of Spain intervened after concerns about Banesto's financial transparency, loan delinquencies, and ability to cover liabilities. Mario Conde was removed as chairman, trading in the bank's shares was suspended, and a temporary board led by Alfredo Sáenz was appointed. The subsequent legal proceedings against Conde included a conviction for financial wrongdoing; the duration and terms of his imprisonment were determined through later judicial proceedings.
