PIX infrastructure cyberattack
Criminals reportedly exploited a vulnerability in a third-party service provider connected to Banco do Nordeste's systems. Fraudulent transactions were associated with a pooled account used by the provider. The bank said customer accounts and data were not compromised, but temporarily suspended PIX operations while conducting a technical review with the Central Bank of Brazil.

Scrutiny of irregular lending and capital-market operations
The Federal Court of Accounts, Federal Police, and Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office investigated transactions conducted during the 2000s. Audits cited loans and debenture purchases allegedly made without adequate guarantees, complete documentation, or sufficiently rigorous credit analysis. An audit estimated approximately R$500 million in losses through 2008, without adjustment. BNB said the transactions complied with regulatory parameters and generated profits, while former executives denied wrongdoing. Later management changes and procedural reforms sought to strengthen credit review, oversight, and debt recovery.

Investigations into historical lending and capital-market transactions
Audits and investigations by Brazil's Federal Court of Accounts, Federal Police, and Federal Public Prosecutor's Office examined lending and debenture purchases carried out during the 2000s. Authorities reported inadequate guarantees, incomplete documentation, weak credit analysis, and deficient recovery procedures in numerous cases. The review included a reported R$110 million purchase of WTorre debentures, while other transactions involved construction and infrastructure companies. The broader weaknesses were associated with estimated historical losses of about R$500 million through 2008, unadjusted. Banco do Nordeste said the transactions followed regulatory parameters and that it ultimately made a profit from them, while companies and former executives disputed wrongdoing. Later management changes and procedural reforms sought to strengthen credit review, oversight, and debt recovery.
