Fossil-fuel investment controversy and literary sponsorship withdrawals
Baillie Gifford faced criticism from authors, campaigners, and literary organizations over investments in companies connected with fossil fuels. The dispute led the Edinburgh International Book Festival and Hay Festival to suspend sponsorship arrangements. Baillie Gifford subsequently announced that it would withdraw from its remaining literary-festival sponsorships. Richard Flanagan, winner of the 2024 Baillie Gifford Prize, also criticized the firm's position and said he would not accept the prize money pending further action.
