AVEVA
Industrial software brand providing engineering, operations, asset-performance, simulation, and industrial data solutions.
Last updated August 21, 2026
Overview
AVEVA is a British industrial software brand whose origins lie in the Computer-Aided Design Centre, a research organization established in Cambridge in 1967 by the UK Ministry of Technology and Cambridge University. The centre was created to develop computer-aided design methods and encourage their adoption by British industry. Over time, its research was commercialized into software for complex engineering and industrial environments, particularly process plants, ships, infrastructure, energy facilities, and manufacturing operations. The organization became a private company in 1983 and underwent a management buyout in 1994. It was floated on the London Stock Exchange in 1996 and adopted the AVEVA name in 2001. The company built its position through a combination of proprietary development and acquisitions. Its portfolio expanded from plant and marine design into structural detailing, three-dimensional data capture, engineering collaboration, operational integrity, contract-risk management, asset-performance management, production accounting, simulation, and industrial data infrastructure. A central part of the brand's historical importance was the Plant Design Management System, or PDMS, which originated from early CADCentre work and became widely associated with three-dimensional process-plant design. AVEVA subsequently developed connected engineering and information-management offerings intended to maintain a common information environment across design, construction, commissioning, and operations. Its software has been used in capital-intensive industries where engineering data, operational technology, maintenance information, and production performance need to be coordinated over long asset lifecycles. AVEVA's corporate structure changed substantially in 2018, when it combined with Schneider Electric's industrial software business through a reverse takeover arrangement. Schneider Electric became the largest shareholder, initially holding approximately 60 percent of the enlarged company. This combination brought together AVEVA's engineering and industrial information-management products with Schneider's operations, automation, control, and industrial software portfolio. The company continued to broaden its data and analytics capabilities, most notably through the acquisition of OSIsoft. Announced in 2020 and completed in 2021, the transaction added the PI System, a widely used industrial data infrastructure platform, to AVEVA's portfolio. The deal strengthened the brand's position in real-time operational data, performance monitoring, industrial analytics, and digital transformation. In 2022, Schneider Electric agreed to acquire the remaining publicly held shares of AVEVA. The transaction valued the whole company at approximately £9.48 billion according to the cited reference material. Schneider completed the acquisition on 18 January 2023, following the final day of AVEVA share trading on 17 January. AVEVA therefore ceased to be a separately listed company, but the brand and its software activities continued within Schneider Electric's industrial automation and software business. Its present market role is that of a global industrial software platform serving engineering, operations, maintenance, asset management, and industrial data use cases.
History
AVEVA began as the Computer-Aided Design Centre in Cambridge in 1967. The centre was created by the UK Ministry of Technology and Cambridge University as a government-funded research institute intended to advance computer-aided design and promote industrial adoption. Early work included research into computer-aided engineering and the development of the Plant Design Management System, which became an important foundation for three-dimensional process-plant design. The centre became a private company in 1983. A management buyout followed in 1994 under managing director Bob Bishop, and the business became publicly quoted in 1996. In 2001, it adopted the AVEVA name. The renamed company pursued international expansion and enlarged its portfolio through acquisitions in marine design, web collaboration, instrumentation engineering, operations integrity, 3D data capture, structural detailing, visualization, contract-risk management, asset performance, and production accounting. Notable transactions included the acquisition of Tribon Solutions in 2004, adding naval-architecture and shipbuilding software; Realitywave in 2005, adding web collaboration and streaming technology; iDesignOffice in 2009; Logimatic's MARS business and the oil-and-gas operations-integrity business of ADB Systemer in 2010; the LFM software division of Z+F UK in 2011; Bocad in 2012; and assets associated with Global Majic Software later in 2012. AVEVA acquired 8over8 in 2015 for contract-risk management, Shell-related EDD and PDMSi intellectual property in 2018, MaxGrip assets in 2019, and MESEnter in 2020. The strategic turning point came in 2018, when AVEVA combined with Schneider Electric's industrial software business. Schneider became the largest shareholder, linking AVEVA's engineering and information-management capabilities with Schneider's industrial automation and operational software activities. AVEVA then made its largest expansion into industrial data through the acquisition of OSIsoft, announced in 2020 and completed in March 2021. The transaction brought the PI System into the AVEVA portfolio and reinforced the company's focus on operational data, analytics, and industrial performance. In September 2022, Schneider Electric agreed to acquire the remaining shares of AVEVA. Trading in AVEVA shares ended on 17 January 2023, and the acquisition was completed the following day. AVEVA ceased to be a separately listed company while continuing as a software brand and business within Schneider Electric. The brand's historical trajectory is therefore a progression from publicly supported CAD research, through specialist engineering software, to a broad industrial software platform spanning design, construction, operations, maintenance, asset performance, and industrial data.
