Ponte Morandi infrastructure disaster
The collapse of the Polcevera viaduct in Genoa on 14 August 2018 killed 43 people and resulted in intense scrutiny of Autostrade per l'Italia's concession, inspection and maintenance responsibilities. The disaster led to political efforts to revise the company's relationship with the state and ultimately contributed to the ownership restructuring completed after 2020.
