Overview
Astra Aircraft Factory was an early Romanian aircraft-manufacturing operation based in Arad. Its aircraft activity lasted only from 1923 to 1925, but it occupies an important place in the development of Romania's interwar aviation industry as the country's second factory to build aircraft. The operation emerged from the industrial complex that had previously included the Marta factory, a producer of Austro-Daimler aircraft engines from 1915. After the First World War, Marta was merged with the Weitzer wagon works and became Uzina de Vagoane Astra Arad, a large industrial enterprise whose principal business remained railway rolling stock. In 1923, aviation officer Comandor Andrei Popovici, formerly commander of Grupul 2 Aeronautic, became director of the factory. Around the same time, Astra began work on an aircraft designed by engineer Stanislav Șeșefschi. The resulting Astra-Șeșefschi was a two-seat reconnaissance biplane and the first aircraft built at the plant. It was tested by Lieutenant Ion Sava and subsequently evaluated by several aviation units. Sava and pilot Petre Macavei also flew the aircraft nonstop from Arad to Bucharest in approximately two and a half hours. The aircraft used a six-cylinder, 250-horsepower Marta-Benz engine, described in the historical record as the first Romanian-built engine installed in an aircraft that flew. Astra subsequently became involved in production of the Proto training and school aircraft. Proto 1 had been designed by Major Ștefan Protopopescu with engineers Dumitru Baziliu and Gheorghe Ticău, and its qualities led the Romanian Ministry of War to order 25 aircraft from Astra. After an accident involving Ioan Sava Câmpineanu in 1924, production of the original version was halted. The design was modified for greater structural safety, particularly through reinforcement of the wing spars and the addition of another pair of interplane struts. The improved aircraft was produced as Proto 2, with 25 examples supplied to the Ministry of War. The factory's final aircraft was the Astra-Proto, a reconnaissance biplane designed by Protopopescu and powered by a 300-horsepower Hispano-Suiza engine. Its prototype successfully completed testing and met the stated requirements, but Astra did not receive an order for serial production. In 1925, aircraft manufacturing at Arad ended when the plant and its personnel were transferred to the newly established Industria Aeronautică Română, commonly known as IAR, in Brașov. Astra continued its railway-industrial activities and also manufactured 250-horsepower Martha-Benz aircraft engines, but it ceased to exist as an independent aircraft producer. Its technical personnel and accumulated experience contributed to the formation of Romania's subsequent centralized aeronautical production capability.
History
The industrial background of Astra's aircraft operation dated to the Marta factory, which had produced Austro-Daimler aircraft engines from 1915. Following the First World War, Marta was combined with the Weitzer wagon factory and became Uzina de Vagoane Astra Arad. The merged enterprise was primarily associated with railway rolling stock, but its engineering base and earlier engine-manufacturing experience enabled it to enter aircraft production. In 1923, Comandor Andrei Popovici became director of the factory. A new aircraft prototype was being developed at approximately the same time by engineer Stanislav Șeșefschi. The resulting Astra-Șeșefschi was a two-seat reconnaissance biplane and the first aircraft built by the Arad factory. Lieutenant Ion Sava conducted testing, after which the aircraft was circulated among aviation units for operational evaluation. Sava and Petre Macavei completed a nonstop flight between Arad and Bucharest in about two and a half hours. The aircraft's six-cylinder, 250-horsepower Marta-Benz engine represented an important domestic industrial achievement because it was the first Romanian-built engine installed on an aircraft that subsequently flew. Astra then manufactured the Proto family of school and training aircraft. Proto 1 had been designed by Major Ștefan Protopopescu in cooperation with engineers Dumitru Baziliu and Gheorghe Ticău. Its performance and suitability led the Ministry of War to place an order for 25 aircraft. Following the 1924 accident of Ioan Sava Câmpineanu, production was suspended and the design was revised. The improved version, named Proto 2, retained the general configuration but strengthened the wing structure by enlarging the spars and adding a further pair of interplane struts. Astra produced 25 Proto 2 aircraft for the Ministry of War. In 1925, Astra completed the prototype of the Astra-Proto, another reconnaissance biplane designed by Protopopescu. It used a 300-horsepower Hispano-Suiza engine and passed its tests successfully. Although the aircraft met the relevant requirements, no serial-production order was awarded. Aircraft manufacturing at Astra ended in the same year when the plant and its personnel were transferred to the newly created Industria Aeronautică Română in Brașov. This transfer brought Astra's brief aircraft-building period to an end while preserving its technical knowledge within Romania's emerging national aircraft industry. After the transfer, the Arad works continued to manufacture railway rolling stock and also produced 250-horsepower Martha-Benz aircraft engines. Engineers and specialists associated with the aircraft program included Radu Onciul, Ștefan Urziceanu, Dumitru Barbieri, Stanislav Șeșefschi and Victor Fedorov. Although Astra produced only a small number of aircraft types and operated as an aircraft manufacturer for roughly two years, its work formed part of the transition from scattered interwar aviation experiments toward a more organized Romanian aeronautical production sector.
