Overview
Armadillo Aerospace was an American private aerospace company founded and principally funded by John Carmack, the video-game programmer associated with id Software. Based in Mesquite, Texas, the company pursued low-cost experimental rocketry, with an initial ambition to develop a crewed suborbital spacecraft for space tourism and a longer-term interest in orbital launch systems. The company distinguished itself through a rapid build-and-test engineering culture. Rather than pursuing large conventional aerospace programs, Armadillo designed relatively simple, computer-controlled, vertical-takeoff-and-vertical-landing vehicles and tested them repeatedly. Its vehicles generally used liquid propellants, pressure-fed systems, thrust-vector control, GPS and inertial sensing, and reusable structures. The organization emphasized reducing hardware complexity, development cost and turnaround time, while accepting frequent test failures as part of the learning process. Armadillo became especially visible through the Ansari X Prize and Northrop Grumman Lunar Lander Challenge programs. Its early Pixel and Texel vehicles narrowly missed the Level 1 prize at the 2006 Wirefly X PRIZE Cup after several attempts were affected by landing and guidance problems. The company returned to the competition in 2007 with modular vehicles, but engine ignition, combustion-chamber and flight-control failures prevented a successful prize run. On October 24, 2008, Armadillo won the Level 1 Lunar Lander Challenge prize of $350,000. On September 12, 2009, it completed the Level 2 course and received the $500,000 second prize, while Masten Space Systems won the $1 million first prize. Beyond competitions, Armadillo explored commercial partnerships. In 2008, the Rocket Racing League announced plans to use an Armadillo liquid-oxygen-and-ethanol engine in later-generation demonstration aircraft, although the league never progressed to a racing season. In 2010, Armadillo signed an exclusive arrangement with Space Adventures under which Armadillo was to develop a suborbital rocket and Space Adventures was to market tourist flights. The company also developed Super Mod and Stig vehicles for higher-altitude research and potential commercial launch applications. The Stig program demonstrated the difficulty of progressing from experimental flights to reliable reusable operations. A 2012 flight reached approximately 50 miles, but recovery systems did not perform as intended. The January 2013 STIG-B flight ended in a hard landing after a parachute failure. In August 2013, Carmack said the company had entered “hibernation mode.” Armadillo had stopped taking profitable contract research work in order to concentrate on its own suborbital vehicle, and the resulting development effort had been funded largely by Carmack. The company's assets were sold to EXOS Aerospace Systems & Technologies in 2015. Armadillo therefore remains historically important as an early privately funded rocketry venture, but it is no longer an operating brand.
History
Armadillo Aerospace emerged as a privately financed alternative to traditional aerospace organizations. John Carmack founded the company around a philosophy of inexpensive hardware, modern digital control systems and frequent testing. In its early period, employees, including Carmack, commonly maintained other full-time employment and contributed to the project on a part-time basis. The company publicly characterized itself as self-funded, and its limited budget shaped a design approach centered on pressure-fed liquid-propellant systems, reusable vertical landing and relatively small vehicles. The company's early public objective was a crewed suborbital spacecraft for space tourism, with orbital flight as a longer-term possibility. Its Ansari X Prize vehicle used computer-controlled jet vanes and fiber-optic gyroscopes rather than relying primarily on conventional stabilizing fins. Armadillo favored a simple propellant and engine architecture, including hydrogen peroxide and methanol systems, in an effort to reduce plumbing and operational complexity. Competition testing provided much of the company's early visibility. Pixel and Texel participated in the 2006 Wirefly X PRIZE Cup Lunar Lander Challenge, where repeated flight attempts demonstrated substantial hover capability but ended with landing-gear, guidance and landing-control failures. In 2007, a tethered Texel accident caused a fire and destroyed the vehicle. The remaining Pixel vehicle and a new modular craft, MOD, were used in further attempts. MOD completed individual legs but suffered clogged igniters, hard starts, cracked graphite combustion chambers and aborted or unstable landings. The 2008 competition brought a breakthrough. After an unsuccessful initial attempt and a second attempt interrupted by the flight window, Armadillo completed the Level 1 requirements at Las Cruces International Airport and won $350,000. Its attempt at Level 2 the following day ended when a fuel-line problem caused the vehicle to topple. In 2009, the company returned with MOD and successfully flew both Level 2 legs for more than three minutes each. Its landing accuracy was insufficient for first place, but it won the $500,000 second prize. Armadillo also sought commercial applications. It entered a proposed engine relationship with the Rocket Racing League and later signed an exclusive Space Adventures agreement for a planned suborbital tourism service. Its Super Mod vehicle represented an improved version of the modular system and was submitted to NASA's Flight Opportunities Program as a possible suborbital reusable launch vehicle. The Stig family was designed for higher-altitude, lower-drag flights using elongated cylindrical tanks. A 2012 flight reached approximately 82 kilometers, but recovery problems persisted. The January 2013 STIG-B flight ended in a hard landing after its parachute failed to deploy properly. In August 2013, Carmack stated that Armadillo had entered hibernation. The company had discontinued profitable contract research work roughly two years earlier to focus on its own reusable suborbital vehicle, while development expenses were funded personally by Carmack. The loss of a vehicle and the absence of a multi-vehicle testing strategy made the setback more consequential. In 2015, EXOS Aerospace acquired Armadillo's assets. Former Armadillo employees used related research in the development of EXOS's SARGE vehicle, which first flew in 2018. Carmack later indicated that a future personal return to rocketry was possible, but no revival of Armadillo Aerospace is documented.
