    Misreporting surrounding the Elaine massacre

The Gazette repeated official claims that African Americans in the Elaine area were preparing an insurrection and characterized the area as a zone of Black revolt. The reporting contributed to a false public narrative during a period in which more than one hundred African Americans were indicted and twelve were sentenced to death. The twelve death sentences were later overturned after NAACP legal efforts.
