Overview
Arçelik A.Ş. is a Turkey-based multinational manufacturer of durable household goods and consumer electronics. Founded in 1955 by Lütfü Doruk in partnership with Vehbi Koç, the company developed from a Turkish appliance producer into an international group with manufacturing, sales, marketing, research, and after-sales operations across multiple regions. Its core product categories include refrigerators and freezers, washing machines, dishwashers, cooking appliances, air conditioners, televisions, vacuum cleaners, coffee machines, blenders, and other small domestic appliances. It also produces selected components used in appliance manufacturing. The company began domestic production with a washing machine in 1959 and a refrigerator in 1960 at its Çayırova facility in Istanbul. Its expansion accelerated from the 2000s through acquisitions, brand development, joint ventures, and partnerships. Arçelik built a broad brand portfolio that has included Arçelik, Beko, Grundig, Dawlance, Altus, Blomberg, Arctic, Defy, Leisure, Elektra Bregenz, Flavel, and other regional names. Beko has generally served as the group’s most visible international consumer brand, while Arçelik remains an important market-facing brand in Turkey. Arçelik’s international footprint has included operations in more than 100 countries, international subsidiaries, a large Turkish branch network, and production facilities in Turkey, Romania, Russia, China, South Africa, Thailand, and other locations. The group has used both wholly owned businesses and partnerships to enter markets. Examples include the Arçelik-LG air-conditioning joint venture in Turkey, the Voltbek partnership with Tata Group in India, and the Arçelik Hitachi Home Appliances joint venture serving markets outside Japan. The company has also expanded through acquisitions such as Grundig, Defy, Dawlance, and a majority stake in Singer Bangladesh. In Europe, Arçelik agreed with Whirlpool to combine their European appliance activities in Beko Europe, with Arçelik holding the majority stake. The transaction broadened the group’s European manufacturing and brand portfolio and placed brands such as Whirlpool and Bauknecht within the combined structure, subject to the relevant transaction and regulatory arrangements. Arçelik also acquired Whirlpool operations in selected markets, including Turkey and parts of the Middle East, Africa, Russia, and the Commonwealth of Independent States. The company competes through a combination of scale manufacturing, broad distribution, regional brands, product engineering, and value-oriented as well as premium offerings. Its research and development network has supported connected appliances, energy and water efficiency, recycled-material applications, coffee preparation, and specialized household functions. Arçelik has reported operating 17 R&D centers globally and has appeared in international patent-filing rankings. Sustainability is another stated element of the company’s strategy. Arçelik has participated in the Borsa Istanbul Sustainability Index, the FTSE4Good Emerging Index, CDP assessments, the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, and EcoVadis evaluations. Its sustainability programs have addressed energy use, water security, climate performance, circular materials, product efficiency, and responsible manufacturing. The corporate group’s international activities and brand architecture have evolved over time, including a stronger use of the Beko identity for global operations.
History
Arçelik was founded in 1955 within the Koç Group, during a period when Turkey was building domestic industrial capacity and expanding household access to manufactured consumer goods. The company entered the appliance field with the objective of developing local production rather than relying solely on imported products. Its first factory began production in Istanbul in 1959, marking the start of a manufacturing base that would later grow to include numerous facilities in Turkey and abroad. During its early decades, Arçelik established a strong position in refrigerators, washing machines, cooking appliances, and other durable household products. Its growth was supported by domestic distribution, after-sales service, engineering capabilities, and the expansion of Turkey's consumer market. The brand became a familiar name in Turkish homes and developed a reputation as a broad-line appliance supplier rather than a specialist in only one category. From the 1980s and 1990s, the company increasingly pursued export growth and international competitiveness. It invested in product development, production technology, and manufacturing efficiency, while beginning to establish a broader international brand and subsidiary structure. In the following decades, Arçelik A.Ş. expanded through acquisitions, partnerships, and new operations. The group acquired or developed positions associated with brands including Beko, Grundig, Defy, Arctic, Blomberg, and others, creating a multi-brand architecture designed for different national markets and consumer segments. The corporate group expanded its geographic footprint across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and other markets. Arçelik remained especially important in Turkey, while Beko became a leading international consumer brand for the group. The company also developed research and development capabilities in areas such as refrigeration, laundry, cooking, motors, electronics, connectivity, and energy efficiency. These capabilities supported a transition from conventional appliances toward connected and more resource-efficient home products. Sustainability became a prominent part of the company's strategy. Arçelik has highlighted energy and water efficiency, recycled and recyclable materials, climate targets, renewable electricity, product longevity, and circular manufacturing. The company's sustainability work has included recycling and resource-recovery activities as well as research into lower-impact materials and production processes. A major structural turning point came through the agreement between Arçelik and Whirlpool concerning their European home-appliance operations. The transaction was completed in 2024 and created Beko Europe, with Arçelik holding the majority stake and Whirlpool retaining a minority interest. This enlarged the group's European industrial and commercial platform and combined major appliance operations under a new corporate arrangement. Arçelik A.Ş. continued to operate as the wider group, with Arçelik remaining an important Turkish brand within its portfolio. Today, Arçelik is an active Turkish-origin appliance brand with a substantial domestic presence and an international corporate infrastructure behind it. Its history reflects the evolution of Turkey's manufacturing economy: domestic production and retail reach came first, followed by export development, global brand management, acquisitions, technology investment, and a greater focus on sustainability and connected homes.
