The APOGEPHA Arzneimittel GmbH has a history as a traditional pharmaceutical manufacturer in Dresden, with urological research and product developments dating back to the 19th century. It originated from a pharmacy: in 1882, pharmacist C. Stephan founded a manufacturing operation, later merging with the laboratory of the Dresden Kronenapotheke. After several changes of ownership, the paths of the still-existing Dresden Kronenapotheke and the manufacturing company separated in 1913. Five years later, the manufacturing operation, then operating as 'C. Stephan: Fabrik für chemisch-pharmazeutische Produkte', moved into new production facilities in Dresden Striesen, which are still the company's headquarters today. Due to the economic situation after World War I and inflation, the company was forced to form a stock corporation in 1921. During this time, the Leowerke and Ottomar von Mayenburg, the inventor of Chlorodont toothpaste, entered the company's management. A few years later, the Leowerke took over the company 100%. In 1931, the Leowerke sold the pharmaceutical company to the Sächsische Apothekergenossenschaft, which wanted to establish its own pharmaceutical production on a larger scale.
