Anora Group

Anora Group is a Nordic distilled-beverage and wine company headquartered in Helsinki, Finland. It was established on 1 September 2021 when Finnish alcohol producer and brand company Altia Group merged with Norwegian spirits and wine business Arcus Group. The combination created one of the largest alcohol companies based in the Nordic region, joining consumer brands, production assets, wine distribution, contract manufacturing and industrial alcohol operations under one listed company. Anora's commercial activities are organized around wine, spirits, international business and industrial alcohol products. Its spirits portfolio includes vodka, aquavit, cognac, gin, liqueurs and other distilled beverages. The company owns or markets recognized Nordic brands including Koskenkorva, Linie Aquavit, Blossa, O. P. Anderson, Larsen, Skagerrak, Chill Out, Falling Feather, Ruby Zin and Wongraven. Anora's history is rooted in the development of Nordic alcohol production, state monopolies and private beverage companies. Its Finnish predecessor, Altia, grew from distilling and yeast production at Rajamäki, established in the late nineteenth century. Following Finland's prohibition period, the state developed production and sales structures for legal alcohol. Production was separated from the retail monopoly in 1999, creating Altia as a partly privatized producer and brand company, while Alko continued as Finland's state alcohol retailer. Altia subsequently built an international portfolio through acquisitions in several European countries and became associated with brands such as Koskenkorva and O. P. Anderson. Arcus developed from the Norwegian alcohol system. In the nineteenth century, Jørgen Bernhoft Lysholm established a distillery in Trondheim, creating the foundation for the Linie Aquavit tradition. Other historic Norwegian producers included Løiten Distillery. During Norway's prohibition period, the state created Vinmonopolet, which became the country's monopoly alcohol producer, importer and retailer. After production was later separated from retail, Arcus Group was formed in 1996 as a publicly traded successor to the state's production activities. Arcus expanded its portfolio and also acquired historic Danish spirits assets. The Danish assets had their own long history. Distilling in Aalborg included the businesses associated with Isidor Henius and Aalborg Privilegerede Spritfabrik. These operations were consolidated into De Danske Spritfabrikker, which eventually controlled Danish distilling under a state-sanctioned production monopoly. Pernod Ricard acquired the Danish company in 2008, and Arcus purchased the brands in 2013. Production was subsequently moved to Norway. Swedish aquavit brands also entered the predecessor companies. O. P. Anderson had been produced in Gothenburg since the nineteenth century and later became part of state-owned Vin & Sprit. Skåne Akvavit was introduced in 1931. Pernod Ricard acquired Vin & Sprit in 2008, and Altia bought both brands in 2010. Altia and Arcus announced their intended merger on 29 September 2020. The transaction was reviewed by competition authorities in Finland, Norway and Sweden. To address concerns about the combined company's position in Nordic spirits, Altia sold Skåne Akvavit, Hallands Fläder, Brøndum and Grönstedts, while Arcus sold Akevitt Spesial, SPRT and Dworek. Sweden-based Galatea Spirits acquired the seven brands. Following regulatory approval, the merger was completed on 1 September 2021 and the combined company adopted the Anora name.
