Carmelite controversy over the origins of the order

Daniel Papebrochius questioned the historical basis of the Carmelite tradition that traced the order's origin to the prophet Elijah. The resulting dispute involved publications and institutional support on both sides and continued until Pope Innocent XII ordered it to end in 1698. The controversy concerned the Bollandist Society and its scholarship rather than a documented scandal involving the journal Analecta Bollandiana.
