  1. 1745

    Colonial opium monopoly and exploitation

The Society institutionalized a legal monopoly over an addictive commodity in territories subject to Dutch colonial rule. Its commercial success depended on restrictive supply arrangements, political coercion, and the expansion of opium consumption, making it part of the exploitative political economy of the VOC.

  2. 1740

Colonial violence surrounding the Batavia massacre

The Society did not yet exist when VOC forces carried out mass killings of Batavia's Chinese population, but the event formed an important context for the later reorganization of the opium trade. Contemporary and later accounts associated opium commerce with Chinese merchant networks and criticized its social effects, while the violence enabled European officials and investors to expand into affected commercial sectors.
