  1. 2000

Attempts to simulate qualifying surfing activity

Some users created client-side utilities intended to imitate keyboard, mouse, and application activity so that they could accrue surfing credit without genuine browsing. AllAdvantage responded with software updates and detection algorithms, and it withheld payments from accounts judged suspicious.

  2. 1999

    Referral spam and promotional abuse

Members seeking referral income sent unsolicited messages and used other aggressive promotional tactics. Email providers and anti-spam services blocked messages associated with the service, creating criticism of AllAdvantage’s early controls. The company later introduced faster reporting, account termination, and revised affiliate policies.
