A United Kingdom criminal trial revealed that Allseas had been the victim of a reported £73 million fraud connected with an investment made in 2011. The investors were led by Luis Nobre, who claimed links to the Vatican and Spanish nobility.

Controversy over the Pieter Schelte vessel name
The planned name of Allseas' large platform installation vessel drew objections from politicians and Jewish groups because it commemorated Pieter Schelte Heerema's wartime service with the Waffen-SS and his postwar imprisonment. Allseas changed the name to Pioneering Spirit in 2015.
