ADDSCO racial riot and segregated shipways

A violent white riot followed the promotion of African American workers to skilled welding positions at the Mobile shipyard. More than fifty people were reportedly injured, African American workers were temporarily sent home, and the subsequent settlement created segregated shipways. The incident became a prominent example of racial conflict in wartime defense production and did not eliminate discrimination at the yard.
