Westgate-California financial and governance crisis
Air California’s controlling parent, Westgate-California Corporation, was associated with investigations into C. Arnholt Smith’s wider business empire. The Securities and Exchange Commission sought receivership, auditors withdrew certification of certain accounts, trading in related shares was halted, and Westgate later entered bankruptcy. These events complicated proposed transactions involving Air California but did not immediately end the airline’s operations.
