Aegean Airlines S.A. is Greece's flag carrier and the country's largest airline by passenger volume, destinations served and fleet size. Headquartered at Athens International Airport, the airline operates scheduled and seasonal charter passenger services from Greece to domestic destinations, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and selected longer-haul markets. Aegean Airlines developed from the activities of Aegean Aviation and was established as a company in 1995. Its earliest operations were VIP flights from Athens using wholly owned Learjet aircraft. The transition to scheduled commercial aviation came in May 1999, when Aegean began flying from Athens to Heraklion and Thessaloniki with British Aerospace Avro RJ100 aircraft. Later in 1999, it acquired Air Greece, helping broaden its position in the domestic market. During the 2000s, Aegean expanded its network and commercial relationships. The airline entered a partnership with Lufthansa in 2005 and signed cooperation agreements with TAP Air Portugal and Brussels Airlines. It also established codeshare relationships with several international carriers.
