Los Barrios cesium-137 contamination incident
A cesium-137 capsule present in scrap metal was accidentally melted at Acerinox's Los Barrios factory in Cádiz. Radioactive material was released, and elevated readings were detected across parts of Europe. Waste transported from the facility also affected plants in Huelva and Badajoz. Cleanup involved approximately 7,000 metric tonnes of radioactive waste placed in storage at Mendaña Marshes in Huelva. Reported costs included lost production, cleanup and waste storage.
