Bankorp bailout controversy
The Public Protector argued that historical support provided by the South African Reserve Bank to the predecessor Bankorp Group between 1985 and 1992 had been unlawful and recommended repayment by Absa. The Pretoria High Court set the report aside, and the Constitutional Court later upheld a costs order against the Public Protector.

Mortgage-loan documentation disputes
Court proceedings involving mortgage borrowers questioned whether Absa could produce signed loan agreements supporting enforcement applications. In one reported matter, the bank relied on an unsigned blank agreement after stating that originals had been destroyed in a fire; another case was withdrawn. The matters also included allegations about interest and additional fees.
