Overview
Abcam is a life-science research tools brand founded in Cambridge, England, in 1998. It began with a focused mission: make it easier for scientists to find and purchase reliable antibodies through the internet. The idea emerged from research difficulties encountered in a Cambridge laboratory studying BRCA2, where the availability, quality and practical-use information for antibodies could be inconsistent or difficult to assess. Abcam’s original online catalogue model sought to address that problem by combining a broad selection of research antibodies with product specifications, application information and experimental validation data. The company subsequently developed from an antibody supplier into a broader provider of protein research tools. Its portfolio includes primary and secondary antibodies, recombinant proteins, peptides, immunoassays, ELISA products, immunohistochemistry reagents, protein-detection products, biochemicals, cellular assays and epigenetics kits. Examples of its branded or associated technologies include SimpleStep ELISA Kits and FirePlex multiplex assay products. These tools support work in areas such as cell biology, immunology, neuroscience, cancer biology, infectious disease, metabolism, epigenetics, drug discovery and translational research. Abcam serves a diverse customer base comprising academic laboratories, public research organizations, hospitals, pharmaceutical companies and biotechnology firms. Its international operating model combines digital product discovery and ordering with regional commercial, technical and research capabilities. The company has operated from multiple locations internationally and has emphasized online access to technical documentation, application data, protocols and product-selection resources. This information-centered approach has been an important part of its positioning in a market where reproducibility, target specificity and application performance are major purchasing considerations. Expansion has also occurred through acquisitions and internal portfolio development. Acquired businesses added capabilities in mitochondrial research, biochemical modulation, rabbit monoclonal antibodies, multiplex biomarker assays, recombinant antibody discovery, proteomics, immunology, fluorescence chemistry and related assay technologies. In 2019, Abcam moved its global headquarters to the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, connecting the company with a major UK cluster for biomedical science and healthcare research. Abcam was formerly a publicly traded company on Nasdaq and the London Stock Exchange. On 28 August 2023, Danaher announced an agreement to acquire the company for approximately $5.7 billion in cash at $24 per share. Following shareholder approval, regulatory clearances and approval by the High Court of Justice of England and Wales, the transaction was completed on 6 December 2023. Abcam became an indirect wholly owned subsidiary of Danaher, and its shares ceased trading on Nasdaq. The Abcam brand continues to operate in the life-science research tools market under Danaher ownership, while no longer functioning as an independent listed company.
History
Abcam was established in Cambridge, England, in 1998 by Jonathan Milner, Tony Kouzarides and David Cleevely. The founding concept arose from the practical difficulty of obtaining dependable antibodies for biomedical research. Milner was working as a postdoctoral researcher in Kouzarides’ laboratory on BRCA2-related research, and the team saw an opportunity to create a web-based service that would make research antibodies easier to locate and buy while providing clearer information about their applications and limitations. The company initially concentrated on antibodies and built its identity around a broad catalogue, online ordering and supporting technical information. Over time, it expanded into adjacent protein-research categories, including immunoassays, peptides, recombinant proteins and protein-detection products. It also added non-antibody technologies such as biochemicals, cellular assays and epigenetics kits. This diversification allowed Abcam to address a wider range of experimental workflows, from target detection and tissue staining to biomarker measurement, cell analysis and functional protein studies. Acquisitions were an important part of the expansion strategy. In 2011, Abcam acquired MitoSciences, which developed mitochondrial research products and monoclonal antibodies, and completed the purchase of Ascent Scientific, a UK supplier of biochemical products used to modulate protein function. In 2012, it acquired Epitomics, adding expertise in rabbit monoclonal antibodies and operations associated with the United States and China. In 2015, Abcam acquired Firefly BioWorks, whose multiplex assay technology was later associated with the FirePlex brand, and acquired AxioMx, a provider of custom recombinant antibody discovery and development services. Abcam acquired Calico Biolabs in 2019. In the same year, it moved its global headquarters to the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, reinforcing its connection with a major concentration of medical, scientific and healthcare organizations. In January 2020, the company acquired Expedeon’s Proteomics and Immunology business, including Innova and TGR Biosciences. In March 2020, it acquired Marker Gene Technologies, adding capabilities in biology, organic synthesis and fluorescence chemistry for detection-tool development. The company operated as a public business for a period and was listed on both Nasdaq and the London Stock Exchange. On 28 August 2023, Danaher announced a definitive agreement to acquire Abcam for approximately $5.7 billion in cash at $24 per share. The transaction received shareholder approval in November 2023 and proceeded after regulatory clearances and approval by the High Court of Justice of England and Wales. Completion took place on 6 December 2023. Abcam consequently became an indirect wholly owned subsidiary of Danaher, and its shares stopped trading on Nasdaq. The brand remains active as part of Danaher’s life-science portfolio, continuing to supply research antibodies, proteins, assays and related tools to customers internationally.
